Link Building is perhaps one of the most debated areas of SEO. Why? Most likely, because of its difficulty to master! It is debated because everyone has a different view. Some people feel it is vitally essential, whereas others feel good content should be enough.

However, what is apparent is that competition in all areas is rising, and more and more people are using the internet nowadays!

What is Link Building?

Link building is a strategy used by large and small companies. So why is this seemingly arbitrary metric of having more links held in such high regard by search engines such as Google? The World Wide Web is called that for a reason, and that is because it brings together all websites to form the internet.

Why is link building relevant to that?

Because Google needs a reliable way to measure how popular a website is. The most time-tested way to do that is to look at the links! More precisely, it looks at the quantity and QUALITY of the links. Links are like a big thumb’s up for your website! BUT not all are equal!

For example, you may have a company selling catering equipment and small local bakery links to you, Google things yep great, but say one of the large food retailers linked to you, Google would think WOWZER! This site must be good to get a link like that!

Think Good Quality Links!

In a recent official Google Q&A, it was revealed that back-links are still the number 1 most important ranking factor! SEO professionals use a variety of link-building tactics, including content creation, broken link building, and traditional methods like directories.

Google is smart! It knows when you are trying to trick it. It can detect when a link has been created by the user and not by the company or organization themselves. There are links that you can create yourself. The most popular being local business mentions; this is where you can submit your business credentials to a local business or niche directory.

When you add a link to a website, it is “do follow” by default. However, there is an option to set it as “no follow”. This is an easy way for a webmaster to say, “I do not officially endorse this website.” So do ‘do follow’ links matter? The answer is yes, sometimes!

Let’s assume, on the one hand, there is a site with some do-follow links, but they are to a few low-ranking sites that no one really knows.

Then there is a site with absolutely no do-follow links, but the site owner is clever and has posted comments on high-ranking sites, even though these links are nofollow he has still given his own site a bit of weight. Even though nofollow isn’t generally used as a ranking tool!

It is all very complicated if you don’t really know what you are doing! So hand the very important task of Link Building over to someone that DOES know what the best tactics are!
