When the people building AI start asking the world to slow down, the safest place for a hotel to stand is not the comfort zone, and not the fear zone, but the one in between that almost nobody talks about.

Something happened this month that should change how every hotelier thinks about AI. The people who build it asked the world to slow it down.

In mid-September 2026, the leaders of the largest AI companies, including Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, and Elon Musk, publicly called for pacing the development of the most advanced AI systems, citing risks serious enough that they were willing to slow their own most lucrative work. Markets dipped on the news. It was a rare moment of agreement among fierce competitors, and the message underneath it was unmistakable. The technology is advancing faster than our ability to fully understand and control it.

I want to be careful here, because this is exactly the kind of headline that gets twisted into fear, and fear is the last thing a hotelier needs more of. So let me say clearly what this does and does not mean for your hotel, and why I think it makes the case for something I have been saying for a long time, that AI readiness is not optional. It is a must. And the reason is not the one you might expect.

What “too fast” actually means for a hotel.

First, some perspective, because the doomsday framing is not useful to you. The concerns the AI leaders raised are about the frontier of the technology, the most advanced systems,s and their broad societal risks. That is a real and serious conversation, and it is largely happening several levels above the daily reality of running a hotel. Your housekeeping team is not going to be affected tomorrow by a debate about frontier model safety.

But there is a version of “too fast” that lands directly on your doorstep, and it is worth naming honestly. The pace of AI is now fast enough that the tools, the guest behaviors, and the competitive landscape around your hotel are changing faster than most properties can absorb. Travelers are already using AI to plan and book. Vendors are shipping AI features into every system you run. Your competitors are experimenting. The ground is moving, and it is moving quickly, whether or not you have decided to move with it.

That is the real meaning of “too fast” for a hotel. Not that a superintelligence is coming for your front desk, but that the change is arriving faster than comfort allows, and standing still is no longer neutral. When the pace picks up this much, doing nothing is not staying safe. It is falling behind while telling yourself you are being careful.

Why readiness is a must, not a maybe

This is the heart of what I believe, and this month’s news only sharpens it. AI is not a trend you can choose to sit out. It is a cultural change, the kind that reshapes an entire industry’s expectations, behaviors, and standards, and cultural changes do not wait for the people who are not ready. They simply happen, and afterward, some are prepared and those who were caught off guard.

When even the creators of AI are urging caution about its pace, the lesson for a hotel is not to panic, and it is not to freeze. It is that the responsible response to a fast-moving, powerful change is to get ready for it deliberately, rather than either ignoring it or being swept along by it. Readiness is precisely what lets you engage with something powerful without being controlled by it. A hotel that is ready can adopt AI on its own terms, protect what matters, and move at a pace it chooses. A hotel that is not ready will eventually be forced to react on someone else’s timeline, usually badly, usually expensively.

And here is the part that makes this urgent rather than merely important. In a cultural change, the cost of being unready compounds. Every month the ground moves and you have not prepared, the gap widens, and the eventual catch-up gets harder. That is why I say readiness is a must. Not because AI is going to destroy your hotel if you wait, but because the change is real and accelerating, and the hotels that treat readiness as optional are quietly choosing a much harder road later.

The signal hidden in your discomfort

Here is where I want to offer a way of thinking about this that has helped the hoteliers I work with and me, because the emotional reality of AI is as important as the practical one, and almost nobody addresses it.

It is human nature to prefer the comfort zone. It feels safe, familiar, and manageable. But just outside the comfort zone sits the fear zone, and this is where most hoteliers are with AI right now, feeling the discomfort, the uncertainty, the worry about getting it wrong or looking foolish or making an expensive mistake. The instinct in the fear zone is to retreat back to comfort, to say, “This is moving too fast; I will wait.” And this month’s headlines give that instinct a convenient excuse.

But I want to offer a reframe. The fear you feel about AI is not a stop sign. It is a signal. Discomfort is what it feels like to be at the edge of your comfort zone, which is exactly where growth begins. The fear zone is not a place to retreat from. It is a place to move through, because on the other side of it is the learning zone, where you take on new challenges, acquire new skills, and steadily extend your comfort zone to include the things that used to frighten you. And past the learning zone is the growth zone, where the new capability becomes second nature, and you are operating confidently in territory that once felt impossible.

This is the journey every hotelier needs to be on with AI, and not once, but daily. The learning zone is not a destination you reach and leave. In a world that changes this fast, it is where you need to live, taking on new challenges as they come, building new skills continuously, and expanding what feels comfortable a little more each week. The hotels that thrive will be the ones whose people treat the learning zone as home rather than a scary place they visit reluctantly.

So when you feel that discomfort about AI, do not read it as a reason to stay in the comfort zone. Read it as the signal that you are exactly where growth happens, and that the move is forward, through the fear, into learning.

Protecting what matters while you move

There is a genuine responsibility buried in all of this, and it is one I take seriously, because moving forward does not mean moving recklessly.

It is up to the hotel industry to safeguard the integrity of its brand and its culture as this change moves through. AI can amplify what makes your hotel special, or it can flatten it into something generic, and which of those happens is a choice, not an accident. This is why readiness matters so much and why moving thoughtfully beats moving fast. A hotel that rushes into AI without knowing what it is trying to protect can lose the very thing that made it worth choosing. A hotel that prepares, that gets clear on its identity, its values, and the human touch it will never surrender, can adopt AI in a way that strengthens its culture rather than eroding it.

This is the balance the whole industry has to strike, and it is the same balance the AI leaders themselves are pointing at. Move forward, because the change is real and standing still is not safe. But move deliberately, with your eyes open, protecting what matters, rather than being swept along by the pace. Readiness is what makes that balance possible. It is the difference between using a powerful change and being used by it.

Questions hoteliers are asking, answered honestly.

Is AI really moving too fast for hotels to keep up?

The frontier of AI is moving fast enough that its own creators asked for caution this month, but that is a different question from whether a hotel can keep up with what matters for its business. You do not need to track the cutting edge. You need to build the readiness to adopt what is relevant, on your terms, at a sustainable pace. That is entirely achievable, and it gets easier the earlier you start.

If the experts are worried, should hotels wait until things settle down?

No, and this is the trap. The experts are concerned about frontier risks, not about whether a hotel should improve its data, clarity, and team capability. Waiting for AI to “settle down” is waiting for something that will not happen, because a cultural change does not settle; it becomes the new normal. The hotels that wait will simply be less ready when the waiting ends. Preparing now is the cautious choice, not the reckless one.

Does readiness mean adopting every new AI tool?

Not at all. Readiness is the opposite of chasing every tool. It is building the foundation: clear identity, clean data, capable people, sound judgment, that lets you choose the right tools deliberately and skip the wrong ones confidently. A ready hotel adopts less impulsively, not more, because it knows what it actually needs.

How does a hotel move past the fear without being reckless?

By treating the discomfort as a signal to learn rather than a reason to freeze or a green light to rush. Moving past fear responsibly means stepping into the learning zone deliberately, building skills and understanding steadily, and protecting your brand and culture as you go. It is neither retreat nor recklessness. It is deliberate, continuous growth.

Where to actually begin

If this resonates, here is how I would start, practically.

Begin by naming your discomfort honestly rather than dressing it up as caution. There is a real difference between “I have thoughtfully decided to wait” and “I am uncomfortable so I am staying still and calling it patience.” Being honest about which one you are in is the first step, because you cannot move through a fear you will not admit you feel.

Then get clear on what you are protecting before you worry about what to adopt. Your brand, your culture, the human touch that defines you. Knowing what must not change is what lets you embrace change everywhere else with confidence.

Then take one real step into the learning zone, something small, specific, and slightly uncomfortable. If it feels overwhelming, it is not the next step yet. Break it down until it feels doable, and do the doable version. Momentum in the learning zone comes from small steps taken consistently, not from one dramatic leap.

If you are not sure where you stand to begin with, that is worth finding out first, and I made it quick. The Hotel AI Readiness Quiz takes just a couple of minutes and gives you an honest read on how ready your hotel actually is, and where your first steps into the learning zone should be. You can take it at aremorch.com/hotel-ai-readiness-quiz. Think of it as a simple way to see the edge of your comfort zone clearly, so you know exactly where the growth is waiting.

And make the learning zone a habit, not an event. In a change this fast, a little learning every week, across your whole team, compounds into a genuinely ready hotel over a year, while waiting for the perfect moment compounds into being left behind.

The people who build AI just told the world it is powerful enough to be handled with care. For a hotel, handling it with care does not mean staying in the comfort zone. It means getting ready, on purpose, so you can move through the fear and into the growth that is waiting on the other side. Readiness was always the right response to something this powerful. This month just made that impossible to ignore.

If you want to know where your own hotel stands right now, take a couple of minutes with the Hotel AI Readiness Quiz. It will show you where you are already strong and where the learning zone is calling, which is the honest place any real readiness begins.

The compass is ready. The direction is yours.
