Best skiing vacation locations

If you’re looking for some winter sun and want a change from a beach vacation, a ski resort offers a wonderful alternative. With crisp, sparkling snow reflecting dazzling sunlight, you can breathe the fresh mountain air and enjoy your day on the slopes, followed by some fun après-ski socializing and entertainment. Here are some of the best skiing destinations you can find, complete with luxurious accommodation and hospitality – vital to complete your perfect skiing experience.

Deer Valley, Utah, United States

Famous for its beautifully groomed snow, the slopes at Deer Valley are free from snowboarders; also, Nordic skiing, where the heel of your ski boots is not affixed to the ski, is prohibited, making it an ideal destination for enthusiasts of traditional, Alpine or downhill skiing. A great family-friendly location, it is also popular with older skiers. Accommodation here is superb, offering expert concierge and housekeeping services, and many lodgings provide complimentary shuttle services to and from the slopes – so useful after a hard day’s work.

Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia, Canada

Home to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Alpine Skiing competitions, Whistler has so much terrain that you could ski in a different part every day for a week. Heli-skiing is offered here, and there is a tubing hill for those who want to have extra fun in the snow. Known for its vibrant après-ski nightlife and decidedly delicious restaurant fare, this is a festive spot that is also fabulous for families: it features a Magic Castle and “enchanted” Tree Fort as well as a Snow School especially for children. Hotels range from three to five-star varieties, and there are also luxury accommodations with upscale furnishings and sumptuous interiors – perfect places to relax at the end of a busy day.

Innsbruck, Austria

One of Europe’s most popular resorts, Innsbruck comes alive in the winter months with the arrival of the first snow. Surrounded by the peaks of the Austrian Alps, the capital of the Tyrol has an old-world charm that is hard to beat. There are slopes here that are perfect whether you’re a beginner or have considerable skiing expertise, and you will find accommodation at all levels and in a variety of styles, from the traditional, romantic boutique to the daringly modern hotels, so you can choose to experience the grandeur of times past or the minimalism of contemporary chic.

Argentine Patagonia, South America

Nestling in the Andes Mountains, the ski resorts of Argentina and Chile provide outstanding services for visitors who come to ski and snowboard. La Hoya, for example, has lovely powdery snow from early June onwards, and both Nordic and Alpine skiing are available here as well as a circuit for snowmobiles. You can stay in a cabin, an inn or opt for a luxury hotel if you prefer a bit of pampering.

Finally, when you’ve booked your preferred resort, don’t forget to pack all the right gear – salopettes, woolly hat, gloves, and ski boots. Check out for helpful tips on what you may need if this is your very first ski vacation.
