How To Become a Valuable Resource Beyond Accommodations

Hospitality, Tourism and Travel are all growing sectors in the United States.

The customer experience today is impacted by a multitude of variables. And the Hospitality Industry need to capture new team members that have education, training, knowledge and values that are aligned with new market shifts and demands.

The Digital Traveler

Data provided by Expedia shows that;

  • Three out of five digital users consume travel content in the U.S., which translate to 167 million users per month who are actively engaging with travel content on their digital devices
  • 75% are using a mobile device to consume travel content, compared to 55% on desktop

Approximately 1 in 5 travelers turns to Social Media for inspiration within different categories of travel planning, including:

  • Destinations: 27%
  • Hotels: 23%
  • Vacation activities: 22%
  • Attractions: 21%
  • Restaurants: 17%

Social Media and Travel

Social Media today plays an important role both during the decision process and travelers journey.

  • 74% of consumers rely on Social Media to influence their purchasing decisions
  • 83% of leisure travelers use social networking, video, or photo sites are top online sources of inspiration for leisure travelers
  • 47% of Americans say Facebook is their #1 influencer of purchases

How Reviews Impact the decision process

And a TripAdvisor survey shows that;

  • 65% of respondents are more likely to book hotels that win awards from TripAdvisor
  • More than half of respondents (53%) will not book a hotel that does not have reviews
  • 1 in 5 (20%) travelers read over 11 reviews before making a traveling decision.

Transparent Hospitality

During research, I can identify data from various sources that supports a shift in customer behaviors. I still will find data that supports a traditional pattern for the traveler’s journey.

Depending on the purpose for the travel baby-boomers in some cases prefer known familiar patterns for their decision processes.

Millennials, on the other hand, is more open to influence and their decision process is not as predictable.

During this shift, the Hospitality Industry will need to be transparent and meet both familiar demands and needs and prepared to meet new demands and needs.

Hospitality Management Programs

I often talk about Hotels need to start to build a Social Media task team, and develop a new culture that supports happiness for all team members. Building a new solid foundation for success also include that Hotels recruit quality team members.

For me personally, it is very easy to recommend a career in the Hospitality Industry. It’s my passion, love and I have a lot of fun. Often, I meet people that raise concerns about the pay and career opportunities. Instead of looking at the limitations start to look at the opportunities.

All the doors I entered in the Hospitality Industry has provided new unique opportunities. Even the times I ran into some stumbling steps.

Hospitality management is an academic field that explores operational and administrative strategies for hotels, lodges, restaurants, country clubs, amusement parks, and other tourist-friendly establishments. Like other areas of management, hospitality managers work to reduce costs, maximize profits, and create sustainable business plans.

Students who major in hospitality management also learn how to accommodate a range of clients and create a positive experience for guests. Potential concentration areas include logistics, supply chain management, marketing, communications, and leadership.
